At each ISMOS, the Technical & Scientific Committee carefully curate a Symposium Program that best reflects the current state-of-the-art research.

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion and Reservoir Souring
How can we better understand, predict, and manage microbial processes that affect the integrity and performance of energy infrastructure?
This session welcomes contributions on microbiologically influenced corrosion, reservoir souring, biofilm development, corrosion and souring mechanisms, risk assessment, monitoring, mitigation, microbial control, and operational experience. Studies linking microbial activity with materials, geochemistry, operating conditions, and asset integrity are particularly encouraged.
Hydrocarbon Biodegradation
Explore the microbial processes that transform hydrocarbons in natural, engineered, and impacted environments.
We invite research on hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms and communities, metabolic pathways, environmental controls, bioremediation, natural attenuation, contaminant fate, and the application of molecular and cultivation-based approaches. Contributions addressing both fundamental mechanisms and practical implementation are welcome.
The Oil and Gas Microbiome: Problems and Solutions
Microbial communities can influence reservoir performance, production operations, fluid quality, and environmental outcomes.
This session focuses on the composition, function, and management of microbiomes across oil and gas systems. Topics may include microbial community dynamics, biofouling, plugging, microbial control, operational diagnostics, field case studies, and strategies for translating microbiome data into practical decisions.
Microbiology and Sustainable Water Management for the Energy Sector
Water is central to energy production, processing, storage, and environmental protection. Microorganisms can create operational challenges, but they can also support more sustainable treatment and resource-recovery strategies.
We welcome contributions on produced water, process water, injection water, cooling systems, wastewater treatment, water reuse, microbial contamination, biofouling, biodegradation, biological treatment, resource recovery, and microbial risk management. This session encourages dialogue between microbiology, water technology, process engineering, environmental science, and industrial operations.
Microbiology of Renewable Energy Technologies: Geothermal energy, hydrogen storage, CO₂ storage and energy-transition systems
The transition to low-carbon energy introduces new environments in which microbial activity may affect performance, safety, integrity, and long-term operation.
This session explores microbial processes associated with geothermal energy, underground hydrogen storage, geological CO₂ storage, and other energy-transition systems. We invite studies on microbial transformation of stored gases and fluids, biofilm formation, mineral reactions, changes in reservoir and storage performance, microbial monitoring, risk assessment, and mitigation. Contributions transferring knowledge from established energy industries to emerging technologies are highly encouraged.
Novel Methods for Monitoring, Diagnostics and Control of Microbial Activity in Energy Systems
New tools are changing how microbial activity is detected, interpreted, predicted, and managed.
This session welcomes advances in molecular methods, omics, biosensors, imaging, cultivation, activity measurements, chemical and electrochemical monitoring, modelling, data integration, automation, and decision-support approaches. We also encourage contributions that critically evaluate method performance, demonstrate field validation, or connect microbial measurements with operationally meaningful outcomes.
